Sophie Delezio's experiences following highly publicised accidents in 2004 and 2006 served to highlight gaps in the system of care for nearly 100,000 children hospitalised with an injury each year in Australia. The Day of Difference Foundation was founded by her parents, Ron and Carolyn in 2004.\r\n\r\nThe mission of the Foundation is to permanently reduce the incidence and impact of children's injury in Australia. \r\n\r\nWith research partner, the University of Sydney, Sydney Nursing School: the Foundation's Paediatric Children's Injury Research Program was launched in 2013. This program has identified and will address major gaps in knowledge which, once filled, will provide families with the very best experiences in the very worst circumstances. \r\n\r\n1) Who is being injured? where, why, when and what. The research program will analyse emergency department admission data from every public and private hospital in Australia over a the last ten years. With this information, we can start to target specific causes of injuries.\r\n\r\n2) Pre-hospital transport. A vital life-saving part of a child's 'trauma journey' is ambulance transport. If a child is taken to the right hospital, he or she is 3-6 times more likely to survive their injuries. With this research, Ambulance organisations across Australia will be able to review and change their protocols to optimise a child's chance of survival.\r\n\r\n3) No-one knows what happens to the families. The research seeks to understand the families' journeys from arrival in hospital to the years following discharge. A family care coordinator has been appointed in Adelaide, to test the effectiveness of such a position in children's hospitals. \r\n\r\nThe Day of Difference Foundation is a registered non-profit Australian charity, with deductible gift recipient status. It is governed by and independent Board of Directors and is funded by individuals, companies and foundations who wish to be part of a very comprehensive solution.
